This is a call for the creation of transformational "deliberately developmental" spaces—spaces that cultivate the capacities to respond to the profound challenges we face.

Spaces grounded in the revolutionary research of the last half century about our personal and collective potential for growth and transformation.

These spaces can take a multitude of forms from courses and programs to physical environments such as new forms of monasteries or universities.

These spaces are needed if we are to successfully meet the constellation of escalating and interwoven crises ranging from ecosphere degradation to political polarization—crises that are linked both in source and solution, rooted in how we envision ourselves, our societies and our civilization.

In June 2023, Springboard invited 20 students and educators to gather at Seguinland Institute on Georgetown Island, Maine to consider how we might establish, solidify, grow, and make visible deeply transformative learning options. The students were clear and stated: “We are reimagining our educational journeys to be Community-Oriented, Place-Based, Meaning-Centered, and Intellectually and Physically Engaging.” This Report outlines what transpired at the Convening, and first steps we can take toward making the students’ reimagining a reality.

There’s a crisis point that our late teens and early twenties revolve around, as we navigate the onslaught of adulthood and the last securities of youth. This crisis comes in the form of questions, the most important questions that we can ever ask ourselves: What kind of person am I going to be? How will I spend my time?

Bildung is a Germanic term with English and Greek roots and Nordic and American fruits. It describes a sense of fulfilling one’s nature or purpose in response to the challenges of a particular historical and societal context. Bildung entails a dynamic world view that values independence of mind and spirit grounded in ecological and social interdependence. The premise of this essay is that we need to reconsider Bildung today because the challenge of ‘understanding’ in Understanding Sustainable Prosperity is pivotally important. The complexity of the world is overwhelming the complexity of our minds, and addressing that challenge is fundamental to our attempts to create a viable and desirable future. Our understanding of the world is not a spectator sport, but more like an active ingredient in societal renewal. Bildung is about our responsibility for and participation in an evolving process of social maturation that reimagines culture, technology, institutions and policies for the greater good.
